The Elephant Barrier

The Elephant Barrier

This long rampway goes from the first gate to the second gate. The construction of the ramp was intended to keep invaders out. The ramp was steep enough to make it difficult for war elephants to traverse. Further, slots along the walls on either side were built to pour hot oil down onto the rampway making it very slippery. Then archers would shoot flaming arrows that ignited the oil. Once these fortifications were in place, the fort was never breached.
